Home favourite Michelle Li is the sole top seed to have previously aced her event.
Other than Li, no singles player has won consecutive crowns from the beginning of the 2010s.
She is also the only shuttler to win three on the spin this century (2014-2016).
Li and Natsu Saito are just two former winners returning.
Saito, however, is in the mixed doubles draw with Akira Koga after winning in 2023 with Hiroki Midorikawa.
Glory in Markham will make Li Canada Open’s most successful women’s singles star. She is currently tied on four titles with compatriot Marjorie Shedd.

Standout Stat: Japanese pairs have won the women’s doubles title at five of the last seven editions.
Wakana Nagahara/Mayu Matsumoto started Japan’s domination in 2017.
