Three From Time: Masters of Change

As many as six doubles stars could pull off a pretty cool feat at HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2025 in Hangzhou: winning the season finale with a second partner in the same event.

Wang Chi-Lin, Seo Seung Jae, Jia Yi Fan, Kong Hee Yong, Huang Dong Ping and Dechapol Puavaranukroh have all lifted the trophy at least once – and now each could add another chapter to their legacy.

Yet in the past decade, only three players have managed to win the same category at a Finals with different partners.

Here’s a look at this special trio.

Zheng Si Wei (mixed doubles)

Zheng claimed his first season-ending crown at the 2016 SuperSeries Finals, partnering Chen Qing Chen to take down defending champions Chris and Gabby Adcock 21-12 21-12 in a largely one-sided affair. The pair defended the title the very next year, proving it was no fluke. Then came the partnership everyone remembers: Zheng and Huang Ya Qiong. Together, they won their first World Tour Finals in 2019 and went on to collect three more.

Trivia: Zheng and Huang ended their partnership at last year’s Finals as the most successful players in tournament history, with four titles.

Liu Yu Chen (men’s doubles)

Fresh off becoming world champions four months earlier, Liu and Li Jun Hui rolled into Guangzhou with confidence in 2018. They defeated Hiroyuki Endo/Yuta Watanabe 21-15 21-11 to capture the season finale on the brand-new signature red courts. Fast-forward to 2022: Li had retired, Liu teamed up with Ou Xuan Yi, and the new duo made an immediate impact – winning the 2022 Finals in Bangkok on their first try.

Trivia: Liu’s two titles remain China’s only men’s doubles victories at season-ending championships in the last 38 years.

Lee So Hee (women’s doubles)

Lee earned her two titles with Shin Seung Chan and Baek Ha Na. Her first came at the delayed 2020 season Finals (played in January 2021), where Lee/Shin edged Kim So Yeong/Kong Hee Yong 15-21 26-24 21-19 in a gripping all-Korean showdown. Her second, in 2024, was far more clinical – a 21-19 21-14 victory making Lee the only female player to win the World Tour Finals with different partners.

Trivia: Triumphing last year at 30 years, six months and one day made Lee the oldest women’s doubles champion in the 42-year history of the season-ending event.
