Singapore Open: Realigned and Ready

Following a brief split at the conclusion of the All England in March, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei are back in sync.

The world No.4 duo reunited at KFF Singapore Open 2025, opening their campaign with a convincing 21-18 21-15 victory over Americans Presley Smith and Jennie Gai on Tuesday.

Their return comes after a short separation sparked by a minor disagreement, which saw both partner different teammates at the Taipei Open and Malaysia Masters. Now, with that chapter behind them, Chen and Toh are focused on rebuilding their chemistry and pushing forward.

“We are still working to improve – there are plenty of adjustments to make and we will keep addressing them in training,” said Chen, emphasising a long-term view.

Toh was encouraged by their performance against Smith/Gai.

“Considering we hadn’t played together in an individual tournament for a while, we did alright,” she said. “We experimented with a few new things to regain momentum. It wasn’t easy though, because this hall is windy.”

Both players acknowledged their temporary partnerships were valuable learning experiences. Toh teamed up with Loo Bing Kun in Taipei and Kuala Lumpur, and came away with fresh perspectives.

“It was a different dynamic but I picked up new skills and tactical awareness,” she shared.

Chen, who sampled men’s doubles with Wong Vin Sean in Taipei, found it eye-opening as well.

“The pace was different and I learned how to better protect my female partner from the front court,” said the 27-year-old.

Realigned once more, the Malaysians are clear about their goals.

“We want to stay focused,” Toh said. “We know if we do that, the results will come.”

The third seeds face Ye Hong Wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan in the second round today.
