Syed Modi: Sen, Pusarla in Title Round

Home favourites Lakshya Sen and Pusarla V Sindhu made the singles finals of the Syed Modi India International 2024 with comfortable semifinal victories.

While this was Sen’s first final of the year, Pusarla will be playing only her second, and has a shot at her first title of the season.

Sen was in control all through against world No.68 Shogo Ogawa, easing past the Japanese 21-8 21-14, while Pusarla was just as dominant over compatriot Unnati Hooda, 21-12 21-9.

Singapore’s Jason Teh

Sen will take on Singapore’s Jia Heng Jason Teh, who shot down the possibility of an all-India men’s singles final by outplaying Priyanshu Rajawat 21-13 21-19. Teh is in his fifth final of the year and will be looking for his first title of 2024.

Pusarla faces surprise China’s Wu Luo Yu, who is in her first season on the HSBC BWF World Tour. The world No.119 has played just two World Tour events previously, and this will be her first final at this level. Wu was an easy victor over Thailand’s Lalinrat Chaiwan: 21-19 21-12.

Other Highlights

» India had cause for cheer in the other categories, with Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy/Sai Pratheek (men’s doubles), Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand Pullela (women’s doubles) and Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha Crasto (mixed doubles) progressing to the finals.

» However, Crasto suffered a loss in her women’s doubles with Ashwini Ponnappa, as the top seeds went down to China’s Bao Li Jing/Li Qian 14-21 21-16 21-13.
