Season Finale: Race Enters Final Stretch

The final dash for potential qualifiers to the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2024 will begin with next week’s HYLO Open 2024, the first of four remaining World Tour events that will determine spots for the season finale.

The HYLO Open (29 October – 3 November), a Super 300 tournament, will be followed on subsequent weeks by the Korea Masters 2024 (also Super 300), the Kumamoto Masters Japan 2024 (Super 500) and the LI-NING China Masters 2024 (Super 750). Another qualifying (BWF Tour) event is the WONDR by BNI Indonesia Masters II 2024 during the week of the HYLO Masters, the last Super 100 of the qualifying period.

Given the significant ranking points and prize money at stake, fans will expect this late season to catch fire, with several contenders returning from their post-Olympic break, particularly for the three back-to-back tournaments in Asia.

Anders Antonsen

As reigning Olympic champions are guaranteed qualification, there are, effectively, seven spots up for grabs in each of the five categories, with a maximum of two per Member Association.

In men’s singles, Anders Antonsen’s title victory in Denmark has given him a lead at the top, followed by Chou Tien Chen, who is the highest-profile player at the HYLO Open.

With not much to separate players from No.5 (Lee Zii Jia) to No.10 (Kunlavut Vitidsarn), the race for the spots is likely to go down the wire.

Tomoka Miyazaki

In women’s singles, there is likely to be a mini-battle between three Thais (Supanida Katethong, Pornpawee Chochuwong and Ratchanok Intanon) and three Japanese (Tomoka Miyazaki, Akane Yamaguchi and Nozomi Okuhara) for the country’s second spot, given that their compatriots Busanan Ongbamrungphan and Aya Ohori are in a strong position at No.3 and No.4 respectively.

None of the frontline contenders in women’s singles have entered the HYLO Open, but men’s doubles will see pairs like Rasmus Kjaer/Frederik Sogaard and Ben Lane/Sean Vendy in action in Saarbrucken. Kjaer/Sogaard are currently No.10, and with a good draw, can strengthen their position by the end of the week. Lane/Vendy, while top seeded, do have a lot of catching-up to do as they are No.14 in the rankings.

Women’s doubles top seeds Sung Shuo Yun/Yu Chien Hui are No.13 in the rankings and will hope that a strong performance at the HYLO Open boost their chances of making it to Hangzhou.
