The five-edition-old Madrid Spain Masters 2024 by IBERDROLA rounds off five weeks of HSBC BWF World Tour action in Europe.
Let’s look at some fun facts about the Super 300 event.
- Denmark have contested the most finals – 11.
- With seven titles across four categories, they also top the performance table.
- Indonesia, on six and with contenders in four departments, stand to overtake the Danes.
- Korea have the best success rate of 80 per cent, winning four of five finals against other nations.
- Their successes however, have not come outside doubles disciplines. This time around, their best bet is women’s singles third seed Kim Ga Eun.
- Viktor Axelsen is the only shuttler to triumph more than once (2019, 2020).
- Toma Junior Popov, Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari, Pornpawee Chochuwong and Putri Kusuma Wardani can join him on that list.
- Toma, men’s singles champ in 2021, is also competing in men’s doubles this year, with younger brother Christo.
- Except Axelsen, Blichfeldt (2018-2019) and Lee Yang/Wang Chi Lin (2019-2020), no player has played in consecutive finals.
- Last year’s women’s singles runner-up Pusarla V. Sindhu is the sole player with a chance to do that.
Standout Stat: Kenta Nishimoto is the only non-European to win men’s singles (2023).
