Macau Open: Farhan Triumphs; Danes’ Spectacular Return

Fast-rising Indonesian Alwi Farhan captured the biggest title of his career so far, winning the SANDS CHINA LTD Macau Open 2025 in a one-sided final.

The 2023 world junior champion, whose previous best was the Indonesia Masters (Super 100) last November, was all over his opponent Justin Hoh, taking the title with a 21-15 21-5 result.

“Today it was a tough match… I really controlled the game in the first game,” said the world No.25. “In the second it was quite tricky because of the court. I kept consistent in my emotions. Sometimes I tend to make mistakes as I want to kill every point. Today my coach and I planned the victory. I’m really grateful because I worked very hard, and I’m proud of myself. Every day I make progress and I’m very grateful for myself.”

World No.5 Chen Yu Fei won her fifth title of the year, outplaying Line Christophersen 21-17 21-17.

“The key was that I had more patience than her,” said Chen. “Her smash is very hard, so I had to be patient. I always trust myself, I tell myself I can do it, keep going.

“It’s a new start, a good start. At the World Championships, I want to challenge myself and get a good result.”

Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje

The big story of the day was Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Boje’s return to form in their first tournament in over a year. The Danes wrapped up the final over Jimmy Wong/Lai Pei Jing 21-13 21-16, staying focussed despite an injury to Christiansen.

“The key was to stay focussed because it was not easy on court with the water dripping,” said Christiansen. “When we had the injury we tried to dig a bit deeper, we needed to win in two games, so there was not much of a gameplan, we just had to stay focussed and aware. We were happy with our defence. That mattered a lot.

“I’ve been looking forward the whole year to compete again, just being back felt extremely nice, and with the win it’s surreal actually, we didn’t expect it at all. It just got better and better, and we can’t believe we got the win.”

His partner added: “This title means a lot. It’s our first tournament in over a year, so we are on the world rankings. We weren’t expected to win the tournament when we started, but we are happy and proud that we could deliver a title this week. I feel very happy to have him back on court, it’s so nice to be back together. I’m proud of him, and I’m happy with the game.”
