Macau Open: Chen Starts Favourite

Top seed Chen Yu Fei will look to regain the title she won nine years ago when she begins her campaign at the SANDS CHINA LTD Macau Open 2025 that begins tomorrow.

Chen has won four tournaments this season, but having lost in the quarterfinals of her last two events, will look to perform well at the HSBC BWF World Tour before she sets out for the TotalEnergies BWF World Championships 2025 in Paris.

Chen is likely to have smooth passage in the early rounds, with a qualifier lined up in the first round and a likely second round clash with Goh Jin Wei.

Unnati Hooda

Among the women’s singles players who will be in focus are Unnati Hooda, who made the quarterfinals of the VICTOR China Open last week, and Riko Gunji, semifinalist at the DAIHATSU Japan Open.

In men’s singles, Lee Cheuk Yiu, searching for his first title of the season, starts as top seed, and will face home hope Pui Pang Fong in the opening round.

His compatriot and defending champion Ng Ka Long Angus will expect a challenging opening assignment against Kiran George.

Second seed Lakshya Sen, who has struggled to get past the early rounds of his last five tournaments, will hope to break the sequence in Macau. Sen takes on Jeon Hyeok Jin and could run into Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in the second round.

Alwi Farhan

Other prominent names in the draw are eight seed Brian Yang, HS Prannoy, US Open champion Ayush Shetty, and Indonesians Alwi Farhan and Asian Junior champion Moh Zaki Ubaidillah.

Other names in the reckoning are World Junior champions Hu Zhe An in men’s singles and Pitchamon Opatniputh in women’s singles, with both starting in the qualifying rounds.
