Twenty-year-old Ayush Shetty kept his composure in the biggest final of his young career to win the YONEX US Open 2025 beating Brian Yang.

In women’s singles, home favourite Beiwen Zhang reclaimed the US Open after over a decade when she beat Indian teen Tanvi Sharma 21-11 16-21 21-10.

World No.34 Shetty, who had upset world No.6 Chou Tien Chen in the semifinals, beat Yang 21-18 21-13 for the third successive time to claim his first senior title.

“It means a lot, it’s my first title in the senior circuit,” said Shetty. “So I’m really happy. There are a lot of positives to take away. I played some excellent badminton here, and I’m looking forward to the Canada Open next week.”

With some vocal backing from the stands, Shetty edged ahead in the first game and then stormed past his opponent in the second.

“The support meant a lot. I didn’t expect it. It was good to have that behind me,” said Shetty.

“He was defending quite well in the first game. I varied my smashes a bit, played some half-smashes and drops and that made a difference. In the first game I was hurrying a bit playing some sharp strokes. In the second game I was more confident, I opened up the game and that made the difference.”

Yang gave credit to his opponent for imposing his attacking game.

“He started pretty strong in the first game. He was on the fast side and he played it really well and controlled the net, and I had to lift. Second game he got a lot of confidence and continued to attack and I couldn’t find a solution.

“I was trying to do my best to contain his spins and his attack. I trying to have that control and he ended up winning more of the rallies. I definitely need to win those front court battles, and knowing when to reset. I was trying to win it a bit too much at the end.”

“I didn’t win this tournament for more than 10 years. The win was surprising, because before the tournament I was doing physio and rehab and it was hard because I don’t train a lot.
