Chinese Taipei fans could be forgiven for thinking they would have to wait a while to see a women’s singles semifinalist on the HSBC BWF World Tour with Tai Tzu Ying no longer in the mix.
Instead, Sung Shuo Yun has stepped forward, qualifying for her second Super 500 semifinal by beating Thuy Linh Nguyen 21-16 22-20 at DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters 2025.
In doing so, she becomes the first Chinese Taipei shuttler since Tai in 2018 to make the last four at the tournament. Remarkably, Sung also played a first round women’s doubles match with Yu Chien Hui, losing to Malaysians Go Pei Kee/Teoh Mei Xing.
“I see Tai as a role model, not just for me but all of us in the team. She’s always generous with advice but I like to focus on developing my own style,” said Sung.
“Nguyen has been playing well all week, I watched her against (Pusarla V.) Sindhu. She has a lot of power so I needed to prepare thoroughly. I was a bit nervous before the match but managed to calm myself down. This win gives me more confidence going into the semifinals.
“I heard (my semifinal opponent) Ratchanok (Intanon) was watching my match. I’m looking forward to playing her. As for my approach … well, you’ll just have to wait and see.”
Chinese Taipei have a very good chance of ending a seven-year wait for a finalist as Wen Chi Hsu also advanced after defeating Putri Kusuma Wardani 18-21 21-17 21-14. She plays Sim Yu Jin in the other semifinal.
