Only Winners Stay On

Home favourites Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti today tackle Hong Kong China’s Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet head on in a battle that will qualify the victors to the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2021 semifinals.

Jordan and Oktavianti have been inconsistent of late, but shook things up in mixed doubles Group B yesterday by defeating English pair Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith 21-16 21-13 in 33 minutes. They had lost their opening match to Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai.

“It was really important to win,” said Oktavianti. “We lost our first match, we knew we had to fight more to win our next match.”

Another victory will ensure their first semifinal appearance at the Finals after exiting at the group stage in the past two editions.

Jordan stressed the importance of staying switched on against the Tokyo 2020 semifinalists.

“We’ll really need to focus and make sure we enjoy it too,” he said.

Tse and Tang are looking to match their 2017 run.

Tse and Tang are also on one win, having defeated Ellis/Smith 21-11 21-16 in their opener before going down fighting to the Thai pair in three games yesterday.

This is Tang/Tse’s second year-ender campaign – they made the final on debut at the BWF Super Series Finals in 2017, finishing runners-up to Zheng Si Wei/Chen Qing Chen in Dubai.

“We really want to win our next match, we will give it our best shot,” promised Tse.

“We are not last in the group. We played much better, getting confident.”

Their match at the Bali Convention Centre will take place during the evening session.
