Further Disruptions to Group Play in Bali

India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have pulled out from today’s men’s doubles Group A match again home favourites Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

Shetty withdrew on doctor’s advice with his right knee flaring up. The 24-year-old had been nursing his runner’s knee condition since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Gideon and Sukamuljo are now in pole position to advance to the semifinals of the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2021.

Group A rivals Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin and Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen face a key shootout in the final match on Court 2 today. The Danes can wrap up qualification with victory, while the Olympic champions need to win and hope that Gideon/Sukamuljo defeat Astrup/Rasmussen tomorrow to sure up a spot.

Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min was another retiree on Day 2 in Bali.

She too succumbed to a right knee injury when trailing to Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-7 15-9 in their women’s singles Group B clash.

The qualifiers from Group B are up in the air with the result of Akane Yamaguchi versus Ongbamrungphan match critical. A win to the Japanese will see her and Korea’s An Seyoung progress.

An defeated Ongbamrungphan 21-16 21-5 yesterday before falling to Yamaguchi 21-14 18-21 21-16 this morning.

A victory to the 25-year-old Thai will have all three players on one win and one loss with a countback required. The remaining An and Yeo fixture is now void.
