Badminton is a funny game.
A relentless and unforgiving world tour. The pressure valve extreme. Finding the exact science to unlocking that freedom, a nuance that escapes most.
Yet, all of a sudden, one single life event, a change of mindset, or a new hope, can put you back on track. This can be almost as unexpected as the events that took you off course in the first place.
Just ask Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie. Two Olympic cycles where dreams were not fulfilled – bitter disappointment, doubts and a slide in rankings.
Many would have given up, without the belief nor fortitude to search for answers. But somehow, some way, with the help of each other, and as Lai says, perhaps some divine intervention, the Malaysian mixed doubles pair have forged a path of resurgence not many saw coming.
Since accepting their Paris 2024 Olympics fate, the recently wedded couple has won the YONEX Swiss Open 2024 and the PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2024, and today, with one of the most important wins of their careers at the VICTOR China Open 2024, progressed through to their first Super 1000 final on the HSBC BWF World Tour.
It was clearly emotional, and highly satisfying, for their words spoke truer than most.
“I am Christian, and there is one phrase that I always keep in mind. When one door closes another door opens. And I think we’re seeing that, we have never given up and that has kept us going until today,” said Lai.
“Yes, we are playing free. There is less pressure. We are enjoying it more than ever,” added Goh.
Their new-found lease on tour life has seen them move into the top three of the HSBC Race to Finals rankings, and with today’s result, are now well poised for further riches this season. They were also quick to assure media that they had no intention of stopping anytime soon.
“It’s surreal. It’s a feeling I’ve never experienced before. Now three finals in a year. It’s an unbelievable achievement for us. And I want to thank my partner for helping us keep it together today,” said Lai.
“It’s been one of my dreams to be in a Super 1000 final. I’m almost in tears. We’ve been playing together for six, seven years now, and I’ve always told him [Goh] I’ve wanted this, to make a big final one day.
“Every match we play is one less match in the future, so we just want to appreciate every chance we get on court now, so long as we come out safely without injuries or illness.
“But I think you guys will be seeing us for quite some time still.”
For Goh, it’s quite simple. “It’s all down to mindset.”
“We played well in the pressure points today. We were more comfortable, brave and stable,” he said of the 21-18 21-18 result.
“This is very important for us. Because when we lose our mindset we lose our focus. So that’s been the main key. A stable mindset.”
They will face world No.3 pair Feng Yan Zhe/Huang Dong Ping in Sunday’s final.
What a difference three days makes.
On Sunday, Lei Lan Xi got trounced in the LI-NING Hong Kong Open 2024 men’s singles final by Viktor Axelsen 21-9 21-12. [Read More]
Typhoon Bebinca then ripped through the region causing chaos to flights, forcing Lei and Axelsen to both arrive late to Changzhou. The Olympic champ, in fact, only got in around 8pm last night.
Today then was naturally a much different proposition in their first-round clash at the VICTOR China Open 2024.
An extreme drift from front to back and limited preparation and court acclimatisation for each meant this was a much more intriguing contest.
Lei, whom himself acknowledged he “played much faster today” than compared to Sunday’s final, took the first game 21-19.
In typical Axelsen fashion, the big Dane dug deep despite his unusual sluggishness to take it to a third.
Both players raised the intensity in decider to put on a great show for the Changzhou faithful with Lei triumphing 21-16 to the rapturous applause of fans. Watch the highlights here.
“I think he played a fantastic match. He probably should have won in two games,” Axelsen said post-match.
“We had a few challenges getting here. It would have been great for an evening match for both of us. It was interesting that we had an afternoon match. But no excuses, Lei was the better player and he deserves all the credit.”
On the secret to his form reversal against Axelsen, Lei said: “Maybe it’s more on a psychological level. I dared to go and fight today without any pressure and break through.
“Because I lost to him last week, I made some adjustments and just went for every point. Fight, fight and saving every shot.”
OTHER RESULTS
Dane Julie Dawall Jakobsen fought off late nerves to record the biggest win of her career with a stunning upset of still-injured Tai Tzu Ying 21-19 7-21 21-14.
“I’m a bit overwhelmed. I’m really happy. I’ve played some matches against the best players before but could never really close it out. So, I’m really relieved I could do it today,” she said.
“Even though she isn’t feeling so good physically at the moment she still has many shots to play, so I knew it would be difficult but I’m just happy I stayed in the third game. I was really nervous at the end and I knew I had to place my shots well otherwise she’s just too good.
“It’s a proud moment and this is one of the best victories I’ve had in a long time.”
In another head-turner, Malvika Bansod of India defeated Paris 2024 bronze medallist Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 26-24 21-19 for her biggest victory at a Super 1000 tournament.
WHAT OTHERS SAID
“I have told his story 500 times and it must be told 500 more times. It’s the most inspiring story I have ever heard,” said former Liverpool Football Club Manager Jurgen Klopp as he spoke to media after watching his friend SL3 player Wojtek Czyz compete on Day 1 of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
“It’s just not normal, especially his sailing story and he didn’t even know how to sail,” said Klopp, referring to Czyz’ five-year sailing trip around the world several years ago. “His story is so inspiring, so special and the world needs to hear it.”
Czyz struck up a friendship with the German manager more than 20 years ago with Klopp heralding Czyz’s ‘crazy story’ to media post-match. The two revived their friendship playing frisbee on a beach before Klopp took over the high-profile role at Liverpool FC and Czyz went sailing around the world with his wife donating prostheses to those who couldn’t afford it.
“I said to Jurgen back then on the beach, ‘Hey, what are you doing here?’. And now all those years later, here we are,” said Czyz.
Czyz was a 21-year-old footballer with SC Fortuna Koln when during a match the opposing team’s goalkeeper crashed into him causing multiple fractures and his leg to be amputated.
Not to be stopped, Czyz then went on to have a stellar athletics career, winning gold medals in 100m, 200m and long jump at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Paralympics, as well as multiple world titles.
After more than a decade of professional athletics, he retired in 2013 and went sailing around the world, ending up in New Zealand, where he and his wife relocated permanently, started a family, and now run a manuka honey farm. Incredibly, he only took up Para badminton three years ago.
Speaking from the Porte de la Chapelle Arena, Klopp said of Czyz’s performance: “I enjoyed watching the match. Well, the seven points that he [Wojtek] won, ha ha ha,” he said jokingly, acknowledging the 21-5 21-2 result against Great Britain’s No.1 seed, Daniel Bethell.
“I sat next to his incredible wife, Elena, and we both had tears in our eyes. Sport can be about results and winning, but there’s much more behind his story. He’s 44-years-old. I can’t get my head around it.
“Yes, he played the best in the world today, but I enjoyed every second of it. We celebrated each point and we kept going. It was pure joy. I couldn’t be prouder of Wojtek and to be here.”
Czyz said of the experience: “Maybe it wasn’t the best match to have Jurgen watch me, when you’re playing against the best in the world. I think you’re looking at the gold medallist right there.
“But we’re here to advocate the sport for the future. If we can do something and that gives the next generation access to disabled sport and better support, then that’s great.
“With Jurgen’s presence, I think it’s a great statement that we need for Para badminton and that makes me very proud of him, and I’m really thankful for that.”
For the ex-Liverpool man, being in Paris for the Paralympics and supporting Wojtek is part of his quest to help increase the exposure of Para sports.
“I went to the Opening Ceremony and it was spectacular, like a Taylor Swift concert. I saw China and Brazil with these huge delegations of athletes and I was blown away. I didn’t expect that.
“The greatest stories are in Para sports. I am always trying to watch as many Para events as possible and it’s made easier these days with streaming. The whole thing has been wonderful and I’m just glad to support my friend,” said a smiling Klopp.

Lee Yong Dae and Chen Long pledged to use their status as the latest members of the BWF Hall of Fame to badminton’s advantage.
The duo, both Olympic gold medallists, were recognised for their historic contributions to the sport and impact as role models during the spectacular HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2024 Gala Dinner in Hangzhou yesterday.
In his acceptance speech, Lee, 36, said: “It’s a great honour to be placed among the legends of badminton. This is a reward for all my hard work during my playing days. I’ve been waiting for this moment.
“My career might have ended but I cherish every moment. I did my best in every match and never gave up until the end. Thank you for acknowledging and recognising my time and passion on court.”
Lee, seen by many as one of the most gifted doubles players of all time, amassed a record-breaking 46 Superseries/World Tour titles during his career. At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Korean became badminton’s youngest Olympic champion when he won mixed doubles gold with Lee Hyo Jung at just 19 years old. He still retains the record.
“I was blessed with good partners. I want to take this opportunity to thank them,” said Lee, who reached world No.1 with four players – the late Jung Jae Sung, Ko Sung Hyun, Yoo Yeon Seong and Hyo Jung.
“The Olympic gold is obviously the highlight of my career but I’m also proud of having excelled with different partners, being world No.1 for more than 100 weeks and winning 46 titles.
“I love the sport, that’s why I’m still playing at club level. I’m happy I’m able to help and inspire the younger generation. I want to continue contributing to the development of badminton in Korea and around the globe. This induction means the possibilities are endless.”
Chen, accompanied by wife Wang Shixian – herself a former women’s singles world No.1 – and five-year-old son ‘Coffee’, echoed Lee’s message.
“This recognition affirms my career and serves as motivation to continue helping the sport of badminton grow,” said the 35-year-old who retired last year.
“I didn’t expect it this soon. It’s a privilege I deeply cherish. From today, I will promote badminton with a new status. I’m excited.”
Chen’s career was adorned with impressive accomplishments, including Olympic gold at Rio 2016, silver at Tokyo 2020 and bronze at London 2012, as well as two world crowns and 22 Superseries/World Tour titles.
Recalling his extraordinary playing days, Chen said: “There are many memorable moments, especially winning my first world title in 2014 and then successfully defending it the next year. The Olympic gold is special (but) every single victory was unforgettable.
“Winning bronze at London 2012 gave me the motivation to improve and challenge Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei. From being teachers I learned from, they became my targets to defeat. I wanted to be the best in the world. I’m also thankful to them for pushing me.”
Fighting back tears, Chen signed off with a special message to his loved ones.
“I want to thank my family for supporting me so I didn’t have to worry about anything other than competing. To my son, I wish one day you’d represent our country. I love you.”
The BWF Hall of Fame started in 1997 to honour players and administrators who enhanced the sport through exceptional achievements.
Every four years, BWF uses criteria in Clause 15.20 of the BWF Constitution (linked here) to calculate the “Voting Strength” of each Member.
BWF Members can have 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 votes depending on how they meet the criteria (see below). The Voting Strength is fixed for a four-year period from 1 October 2024 – 30 September 2028.
The Voting Strength (2024 – 2028) for each Member which has been confirmed by Council (linked here).
Assessment Period / Criteria
There is a four year Assessment Period to calculate the Voting Strength – which is then fixed for four years.
Clause 7.2 of the BWF Constitution states:
Assessment Period – means a four (4) year period of time over which the criteria in Clause 15.20 are applied to determine voting strength, and extends from 1 October in the year of the Summer Olympic Games to the 30 September of the year of the subsequent Summer Olympic Games.
The four-year Assessment Period finished on 30 September 2024. The number of votes each Member has over the Assessment Period, is fixed for a four-year period.
Criteria to Assess Voting Strength
Clause 15.20 of the BWF Constitution states:
A Member in Good Standing shall be entitled to a minimum of one (1) vote and a maximum of five (5) votes as confirmed by Council in accordance with the following criteria applied over the Assessment Period.
Clause 15.20.1 – The number of votes a Member is entitled to, is fixed for a four (4) year period starting after the end of the Assessment Period.
The criteria above is used to calculate the Voting Strength over the 4 year Assessment Period.
COVID-19 and Impact on the Calculation of Voting Strength
In 2020 and 2021, COVID-19 affected the whole world – travel was restricted, tournaments were postponed and may were cancelled (147 in 2020 and 97 tournaments in 2021), and governments closed borders completely, sometimes for long periods of time.
The two criteria most affected during the first 15 months of the Assessment Period are highlighted in blue above:
Criteria – participate in 6 out of 10 eligible tournaments across the four-year period.
Two eligible tournaments did not take place during the period – two BWF World Junior Team Championships (2020 and 2021).
Members therefore had to participate in 6 out of 8 tournaments to qualify for one additional vote.
This was a significant disadvantage for Members who would normally participate.
Criteria – host eligible tournaments (3 out of the 4 years of the Assessment Period).
Because of COVID-19, many Members had to postpone or cancel tournaments because of the uncertainty, fewer players were travelling, or borders were closed.
Council Interim Measures
The Council considered the impact of COVID-19 on the Voting Strength which is explained in the attached analysis (Annex B) and made some adjustments.
This analysis takes into account only 1) this global event (COVID-19) and 2) its impact on the 2 criteria above, and it made adjustments to the Voting Strength where justified.
The situations of 30 Members were considered and analysed. After the analysis, adjustments were made to the Voting Strength of these 12 Members (related to the criteria below):
See Council Interim Measures – (Voting Strength 2024 – 2028) for more details on the process. The interim measures will be on the agenda at the AGM 2025 for the membership to endorse the procedures.
Subscriptions 2025
The Voting Strength is connected to the amount of subscription each Member pays (see Clause 26.3 of the BWF Constitution).
Invoices for the 2025 subscription will be sent out on the basis of the Voting Strength spreadsheet attached which was confirmed by Council.
Interim Measures by Council
The interim measures taken by Council will be on the agenda for endorsement by the membership at the AGM 2025. The same process was followed for the adjustments made in the previous assessment cycle. The EGM in January 2021 endorsed the Council’s measures.
An Se Young emerged the star of the new-look BWF Player of the Year Awards 2024, becoming the only shuttler to walk away with two trophies from the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2024 Gala Dinner on Monday 9 December.
The winners, assessed over an eligibility period of 12 months (1 December 2023 to 30 November 2024), were announced during the glitzy event at the Intercontinental Hotel in Hangzhou.
Conqueror of five titles this season, including the Paris 2024 Olympic gold, An scooped the Women’s Singles Player of the Year Award ahead of Chinese pair Wang Zhi Yi and Han Yue and Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. The 22-year-old Korean was also voted by her peers as the first Players’ Player of the Year (Women).
“I didn’t expect I’d receive so much support from other players. I’m delighted to get this award,” said An. “(New BWF Hall of Famer) Lee Yong Dae is my idol and he told me ‘you have so much to celebrate today’. I’m so happy. I have so many people standing by me supporting me and they are my biggest motivation.”
As a nation, China dominated the evening, topping six categories, including two of the three Para badminton awards.
Shi Yu Qi, who in June replaced Viktor Axelsen as world No.1 after the Dane reigned for 132 weeks, bagged his first year-end gong while Wheelchair star Qu Zimo took home his third Men’s Para Badminton Player of the Year Award, having also won in 2019 and 2021. With four titles (India, French, Singapore and Indonesia Opens), 2024 turned out to be the most successful year of Shi’s career.
“I feel good because this is recognition for my year’s worth of hard work. I was more spirited this year and performed better, especially in team events. I was determined (to do well) and I achieved good results,” said the 28-year-old.
Meanwhile, Alex Lanier became the first European player in 14 years to be recognised as the best up-and-coming talent in badminton, winning the renamed Eddy Choong Rising Star Award to emulate Axelsen’s achievement from 2010. The French youngster’s breakthrough season saw him triumph at the Super 750 DAIHATSU Japan Open in August after finishing runner-up at the YONEX Canada Open a month earlier.
Lanier said via a recorded message: “I’m incredibly honoured to win this award. Thank you for all the support and I look forward to many more exciting years of badminton with you all.”
He Ji Ting and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela were named the best dressed male and female players respectively.
Badminton icons Lee Yong Dae and Chen Long, both Olympic champions, were later officially inducted into the BWF Hall of Fame at the same ceremony.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is mourning the loss of BWF umpire Mohammed Nazib Ismail from Bangladesh, who was found unresponsive in his hotel room today. Mr. Ismail, 50, was officiating at the YONEX-SUNRISE Guwahati Masters 2024 in India.
BWF and tournament organisers Badminton Association of India (BAI) offer their deepest condolences to the family and to the Badminton Bangladesh Federation. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Mr. Ismail was a BWF umpire since 2016.
The YONEX-SUNRISE Guwahati Masters 2024 is a BWF Tour Super 100 tournament.
Olympic champions Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin and Danish counterparts Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen and are set for one last showdown after the pairs were drawn in Group A at the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2024 draw ceremony.
They faced each other twice at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, once in the group stage, and again in the semifinals, with the Chinese Taipei duo prevailing on both occasions.
Hangzhou is the last dance for Lee and Wang, but they have not played together since the YONEX Taipei Open 2024.
Also drawn in men’s doubles Group A are Chine Taipei teammates Lee Jhe-Huei/Yang Po-Hsuan, and Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzudin.
Fellow Olympic gold medallists Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong will start their final tournament together with a first-up match against compatriots and mixed doubles top seeds, Jiang Zhen Bang/Wei Ya Xin.
Day 1 action begins 9.30am on Wednesday 11 December 2024.

The HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2024 will mark the end of the road for the all-conquering Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong pair; will they be able to achieve a final hurrah in their last tournament together?
This will be question uppermost on the minds of fans as the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2024 gets underway.
Zheng/Huang haven’t played internationally since they won the gold in Paris, four months ago. Will the layoff cause rustiness, or will they come prepared to seize a final victory and leave the scene on top of the podium? The next few days will tell.
Whatever the form of Zheng/Huang, hosts China have sufficient firepower in the paired events. Jiang Zhen Bang/Wei Ya Xin have had a tremendous season, winning four titles from five straight events in a mid-season spell, and they will be expected to feature in the business end of the tournament.
The situation is identical for China in women’s doubles, with Olympic champions Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan not seen in action together since Paris 2024 – although Jia did play with different partners. Yet the home team wouldn’t be too concerned, for young duo Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning have stepped up, and head to the season finale with a string of title wins under their belt.
Challenge to China
Olympic champions Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin have played only two matches since Paris 2024 and their form will be in focus, but the other pairs arrive as equal opportunity contenders. Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen have been in six finals this year and appear to be getting better with time; Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto seemed to have lost their way mid-season, but stormed back with the Kumamoto Masters Japan title recently.
Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin have been a revelation in the second half of the season with titles in Japan, China and Finland, while compatriots Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik hit title-winning form at the Korea Masters.
Lee Jhe-Huei/Yang Po-Hsuan have had a very busy season – playing 21 events – and their form has wavered, but while at their best they can hold their own against any opponents.
The big surprise has been Indonesian pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, who have outdone higher-profile compatriots like Leo Rolly Carnando/Bagas Maulana and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Daniel Marthin. Gutama/Isfahani have steadily improved their performances, and have been in three finals since September.
In women’s doubles, the likeliest threat to China are from Japan’s Rin Iwanaga/Kie Nakanishi and Chiharu Shida/Nami Matsuyama and Korea’s Baek Ha Na/Lee So Hee.
Malaysia’s pairs in the women’s and mixed – Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan, Goh Soon Huat/Lai Shevon Jemie and Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei – have all had a strong season and will look to close it out in the most memorable way possible.
The seedings have been released ahead of the all-important group stage draw for the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2024.
Each event has four seeds. These were taken from the HSBC Race To Finals Rankings released on 26 November 2024.
A maximum of two players or pairs per Member qualified. The reigning Olympic champions gained automatic invitation.
