Chou Tien Chen will have to wait another year to equal compatriot Tai Tzu Ying’s five titles after falling in the YONEX Taipei Open 2024 semifinals to Chi Yu Jen.
Top seed Chou, winner in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2022, lost 19-21 21-11 21-17 to his younger countryman in 73 minutes. It’s Chi’s first win over his senior after three previous defeats.
Chi, whose previous best finish was Round of 16 last year, will now play another Chinese Taipei shuttler, second seed Lin Chun-Yi, for the men’s singles crown. Lin defeated Lee Chia Hao 21-12 21-19.
Besides Chou, women’s doubles top seeds Benyapa and Nuntakarn Aimsaard were also ousted in the last four. The Thai sisters lost 17-21 21-9 21-18 to Indonesians Jesita Putri Miantoro/Feni Setianingrum.
Resultingly, Indonesia were assured of glory in the discipline with second seeds Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi acing their duel with Laksika Kanlaha/Phataimas Muenwong 25-23 21-16.
