Thailand Open: An Se Young, Momota Crash Out

An Se Young, Kento Momota and Anders Antonsen were high-profile casualties in the opening round of the GR TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Thailand Open 2022 on Thursday.

Fourth seed An Se Young was beaten by Denmark’s Line Christophersen, who scored her first win in three matches, 21-16 11-21 21-18.

Momota fell in under half-an-hour to Zhao Jun Peng, 21-8 21-11, who will take on Kantaphon Wangcharoen next. In the same quarter, HS Prannoy, one of the stars of India’s winning Thomas Cup campaign, fell to Malaysia’s Liew Daren 21-17 15-21 21-15.

Third seed Anders Antonsen was shown the door by Shesar Hiren Rhustavito in three games; the Indonesian next faces Brian Yang, vanquisher of Lu Guang Zu.

Significant Results

♦ Fourth seed Chou Tien Chen was beaten by Indonesian veteran Tommy Sugiarto, 22-20 14-21 21-15.

Sim Yu Jin, the heroine of Korea’s Uber Cup triumph on Sunday, continued to impress, as she beat Sayaka Takahashi 21-15 17-21 21-16.

♦ Sixth seed Pusarla V Sindhu had a hard time shaking off USA’s Lauren Lam, 21-19 19-21 21-18.

♦ Pusarla’s compatriot Saina Nehwal however could not progress, as she fell 21-11 15-21 21-17 to Kim Ga Eun.
