Swiss Open: Prannoy Soars Past Ginting Into Final

While it was predicted, or at least expected, that the fans would witness a nail-biting all-Indonesian men’s singles final at the YONEX Swiss Open 2022, it was not to be, as Prannoy H. S. gatecrashed the party after defeating Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 21-19 19-21 21-18 in the semifinal.

The Indian was impressive in form and stature, leading from the start, and after taking the first game, Indonesia’s Olympic bronze medallist chose his moment to stage a mighty comeback to take it to a decider. Prannoy was firmly back in the driving seat for the third game, punching rallies to the backline as Ginting found some answers to his game. Prannoy kept his composure, emerging victorious in the end.

He faces another Indonesian, Jonatan Christie, in the final today.

Busanan Ongbamrungphan squared off with Kirsty Gilmour before seeing off the daring Scot 21-16 21-18 with small deceptions. There were inconsistencies with Gilmour’s game on which the Thai capitalised.

It was Ongbamrungphan’s longest match of the tournament – 51 minutes – while not dropping a game en route to the final, where she faces familiar nemesis, Pusarla V. Sindhu.

The two-time Olympic medallist tips the head-to-head 15 to 1, with the last encounter going in favour of the Indian shuttler at the YONEX GAINWARD German Open 2022 just two weeks ago.

Ongbamrungphan will face Pusarla in the final.
